Will cockroaches really be the last survivors on Earth? - Slate Magazine

Even though cockroaches can withstand 10 times more radiation than humans, they're still not the most resilient organisms (or even insects, for that matter). Mythbusters proved that the flour beetle is more likely to survive atomic war!

Quoted: Pixar's Wall-E depicts a future Earth abandoned by humans, blanketed in garbage, and nearly devoid of life. At the outset, Wall-E, a robot, has but one companion: a friendly cockroach.

    ‘21’ casting unlucky for Asians - BostonHerald.com

The Wikipedia entry and some of the blogs are a bit misleading. Here's more on the '21' casting controversy. Apparently the issue is that the team was primarily Asian (as well as other ethnicities) and that the film throws in 2 tolken Asians in the background rather than featuring them prominently. Also, the characters' ethnicities supposedly figure into the story very clearly in the book. Now I almost want to read/watch it just to see how I feel about it this!

Quoted: The head of an Asian-American watchdog group yesterday lashed out at the made-in-Boston flick “21” and MIT card shark Jeff Ma, who he claims supported the “whitewashing” of the Sony Pictures flick. “It’s insulting and pathetic,” said Guy Aoki, head of the Media Action Network for Asian-Americans.

Anti-abortion activists hijack 'Horton Hears a Who!' - Slate Magazine

It would be funny if it weren't so absurdly stupid (and alarming).

Quoted: It's Fun To Have Fun: Your Hollywoodland correspondent attended the glamorous premiere of Horton Hears a Who! last Saturday and was present when protesters started yelling shortly after Horton uttered his famous motto: "A person's a person, no matter how small."

Patrick Swayze Reportedly Has Cancer - MSN Movies News

Patrick Swayze update! Apparently he's sick, but it's not as bad as people are saying...

Quoted: 'Patrick has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far. All of the reports stating the timeframe of his prognosis and his physical side effects are absolutely untrue. We are considerably more optimistic.

I'm glad they caught the guy that killed Adrienne Shelly, the woman who wrote, directed, and co-starred in "Waitress." Sad & scary.

Oliver Stone Votes for 'Bush' Project - MSN Movies News

Let the jokes begin. They should title this "The Comedy of Errors." Apparently the film is setting out to answer this question (which is also my favorite quote): "How did Bush go from an alcoholic bum to the most powerful figure in the world?"

Quoted: Oliver Stone has set his sights on his next directing project, "Bush," a film focusing on the life and presidency of George W. Bush, and attached Josh Brolin to play the title role.

Taking Children to PG-13 and R Movies - Movies - New York Times

I agree - I think it 's such a great idea for kids to see Persepolis in particular. They can deal with more difficult subject matter than they're often given credit for - not to mention this film might help them relate to kids in other countries...

Quoted: What exactly is a family film, anyway? The rating doesn’t always tell the story.

Post office seeing red over Netflix envelopes - Top Stocks

The Netflix envelopes added $41.9 million in labor costs for the Postal Service over the last two years and will add $61.5 million in the next two. To avoid a 17-cent per envelope fee, Netflix will be redesigning their envelopes...

Quoted: Those red DVD mailers Netflix uses are a huge pain in the butt for postal workers. In a report out this week, the Postal Service says it has to manually process 70% of Netflix's DVD envelopes because they jam up the mail machines.

Dumbledore, meet Tinky Winky. - Slate Magazine

A look at the history of outing fictional characters.

Quoted: On Friday, a fan at a question-and-answer session asked J.K. Rowling if Harry Potter character Dumbledore had ever been in love. In response, Rowling declared, "I always thought of Dumbledore as gay." Rowling is hardly the first to out a fictional character.
