Vanaja | 2007 Seattle International Film Festival | Rajnesh Domalpalli | India

This is one of the Indian films at SIFF this year. Thinking about checking it out on Saturday...

Quoted: An aspiring dancer’s feisty, naive nature gets her into more trouble than she bargained for, exasperating her tutor and seriously endangering her chances at marriage in her traditional caste society. Filled with mesmerizing musical moments, this strong debut proves as enchanting and heartbreaking as the slow end to a sad dance.

hey shiwani, i have been wanting to see this film too! are you just thinking about sat. or actually going to go?

    • shiwani - May 25 2007

    • mohit - May 25 2007

yep, it will be nice to finally meet you.

    • phelps - May 25 2007

totally...ok, i just reread the summary and it looks like it has a sad ending. i really can't stand sad endings. i may need ice cream afterwards. anyhow, shiwani, will you be coming from the u-dist? if so, should we carpool?

    • shiwani - May 26 2007

yes, ice cream for sure afterwards! mo, do you want to pick us up? haha.

    • mohit - May 26 2007

i can drive. just let me know where to be and when!

    • shiwani - May 26 2007

we should be on our way there by 9, because SIFF doesn't allow late seating at all (it's at the Seattle Center). also, maybe we should each buy our own ticket online in advance? mo, i'll call you when i know the details of where we should meet.

this movie was sad, but also very complex and good. i especially enjoyed hearing the director talk about his casting choices and how he felt the actors' lives were (or sadly, were not) affected by being a part of this film.

Hey S & M, sorry to have missed it last night...sounds good but sad. I'll get the review from Shiwani tonight at dinner. Mohit- next time!

I MUST see this movie. I'm sure it will be simply smurfy...

Quoted: LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Smurfs, those blue-skinned cartoon gnomes with short tails and white hats, are celebrating their 50th anniversary with a Hollywood movie deal announced on Tuesday by Columbia Pictures.

Brick Lane | 2008 Seattle International Film Festival |

I didn't realize Monica Ali's "Brick Lane" was being adapted for film! Definitely hope to catch this one at SIFF - the actress will be at the June 5th screening.

Quoted: From Monica Ali’s award-winning, controversial novel, this startling film transforms the text into rich, seductive images layered onto a refreshingly accessible plot. Nazneen is a Bangladeshi woman living in 2001 London. Estranged from her teenage daughter and pseudo-intellectual husband, she falls into an affair with a young, charismatic Muslim activist.

International Examiner - Documentary Explores Anti-Sikh Violence

My article on "A Dream in Doubt," a documentary on post-9/11 anti-Sikh violence in the U.S., and on an anti-Sikh hate crime that took place on I-5 in Seattle. Sad.

Quoted: In the years following September 11, 2001, America has struggled to make sense of a tragedy, turning a scrutinizing eye at the country’s role in world affairs and its immigration policies. In one form, this scrutiny has morphed into an attempt to seek out and retaliate against a tangible “enemy.”

How the backlash against Juno started. - Slate Magazine

I didn't realize there was a backlash against Juno. I thought it was a great film, but I can understand why some people don't think it's Oscar material...

Quoted: Now that Juno has been nominated in four major Oscar categories (best picture, best actress, best original screenplay, and best director) and become the highest-grossing of the five best picture nominees (last week, it passed the $100 million mark), it's become a movie that one must take a position on.

Oliver Stone Votes for 'Bush' Project - MSN Movies News

Let the jokes begin. They should title this "The Comedy of Errors." Apparently the film is setting out to answer this question (which is also my favorite quote): "How did Bush go from an alcoholic bum to the most powerful figure in the world?"

Quoted: Oliver Stone has set his sights on his next directing project, "Bush," a film focusing on the life and presidency of George W. Bush, and attached Josh Brolin to play the title role.

How Wes Anderson mishandles race. - Slate Magazine

Interesting, I've never really examined the way Wes Anderson handles race in his movies - which is precisely the point of this article. Now I'm especially curious to check out Darjeeling Limited to see if I agree with this writer...

Quoted: The Darjeeling Limited, Anderson's latest movie, showcases an obnoxious element of Anderson that is rarely discussed: the clumsy, discomfiting way he stages interactions between white protagonists—typically upper-class elites—and nonwhite foils—typically working class and poor.

Weird, Antonioni and Ingmar Bergman died on the same day.

Michael Moore, Dr. Gupta square off over 'Sicko' - CNN.com

I mean, if they both agree that the health-care system needs a serious overhaul, maybe they shouldn't be sparring like opponents on television. Still, though, I understand what Gupta was getting at - Moore's comparisons can be specious.

Quoted: Filmmaker Michael Moore, whose new documentary "Sicko" takes on America's health care system, faced off Tuesday with CNN chief medical correspondent and practicing neurosurgeon Dr. Sanjay Gupta. Both agreed, however, on the basic premise of "Sicko": Problems abound in America's health-care system and need to be fixed.
