Tasveer - Events - Domestic Violence and Dowry Laws in India

I had looked at a lot of Madhu Kishwar's work in grad school. She really is a pioneer in this field. I recommend checking out one of her talks if you have a chance!

Quoted: As India hurtles towards unparalleled economic growth and projects itself as the shining example of modernity and tradition, the ugly face of domestic violence and dowry-related suicides continues to haunt the country's conscience. You are invited to a presentation on these issues by India's leading activist, writer and publisher, Madhu Kishwar.

    India gets a cheerleading squad...

Quoted: How paradoxical, and delightful, that Bangalore, a city that has leapt to global prominence on the back of work outsourced by America, is now itself outsourcing from America. How TV is empowering the women of India. - Slate Magazine

This article is interesting and encouraging. But I think it puts too much emphasis on TV's influence and doesn't acknowledge that attitudes towards women would already have to be changing for people to embrace rather than reject these new values. I also think more of these articles should look beyond education as a cure-all, and talk about the organizations helping both rural and urban women to become earners, empowering them economically.

Quoted: For millions of women in developing countries, the benefits of TV may be substantive, not frothy.

BBC NEWS | South Asia | More Indians in 'city of widows'

Very sad... Apparently many of these women aren't aware of government policies designed to help them.

Quoted: More and more bereaved Hindu wives are seeking refuge in India's "city of widows" says a report. The study, funded by the UN women's organisation Unifem, found it was poverty, not spirituality, driving women to Vrindavan.
