Damn, I wasn't expecting protests to directly affect the Olympic relay to this degree. Good, though - Olympic officials should be forced to explain what kind of message they're trying to send by picking China to host the games. Still, I feel bad for the athletes - it's not their fault.
Quoted: Security officials snuffed out the Olympic torch and carried it through Paris in the safety of a bus at least five times Monday before canceling the final run of a relay repeatedly disrupted by chaotic protests against China’s human rights record.

This story was all over the news when I was in India - very disturbing trend that points to much deeper issues (the relative inability to get kidneys legally in India AND the desperation of the poor/unemployed who sell their kidneys on the black market).
Quoted: "When I woke up, I felt this terrible pain on my abdomen. They told me they had taken out my kidney. I thought I was going to die," said Shakeel Ahmed, who had come to Delhi to find work.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this episode of Wide Angle, which goes behind the scenes of an all-female Muslim talk-show hosted out of Cairo. It's supposed to groundbreaking, controversial, and inspirational!
Quoted: WIDE ANGLE goes behind the scenes at Arab television channel MBC in Cairo for an inside look at the hit all-female talk show, KALAM NAWAEM. The film provides a nuanced portrait of 4 Arab women harnessing the power of transnational satellite TV to boldly push social reform.

This is such an amazing show, hosted by Daljit Dhaliwal from the BBC. Tonight's documentary on call centers was especially eye-opening, showing how call centers aren't all glitz and glamor for young people in India...
Quoted: Thirteen/WNET New York presents WIDE ANGLE, a weekly series of one-hour international documentaries, anchored by Daljit Dhaliwal.

Wow, I had no idea how strongly the Swiss felt about Swissair. I went to Switzerland on a journalism trip a couple years ago, though, and I remember thinking it was odd how earnestly these officials were trying to convince me that Switzerland is the greatest country ever. Probably doesn't help that they just accidentally invaded Liechtenstein...
Quoted: The Swiss people's love affair with the national airline, Swissair, has ended in humiliation. Last year, a feature film dramatising the end of Swissair broke box office records. In the cinema, some people actually wept.

A public experiment that was better in theory than in practice: "In the end, the restrooms, installed in early 2004, had become so filthy, so overrun with drug abusers and prostitutes, that although use was free of charge, even some of the city’s most destitute people refused to step inside them."
