The author of this piece was surprised to find how many rich, satisfyling wines he was able to find for under $15.
Quoted: The NYTimes recently reported that the sputtering economy and soaring food costs are forcing Americans to become thriftier at the table. Among other things, restaurant alcohol sales are down, and discount domestic beers are gaining at the expense of pricier imports. Wine went unmentioned, but strapped oenophiles are also scaling back.

I don't think I've ever tried an Oregon pinot noir - I'll have to find a bottle!
Quoted: Oregon is known as a trailblazing state, and its pioneering spirit extends to wine. Long before most Americans had ever heard of pinot noir, winemakers in Oregon were staking their futures on this ornery but immensely rewarding grape. The gamble paid off.

This explainer raises a good point - you can make your own wine and beer, but not moonshine. Apparently it's because liquor is worth more to the government than beer or wine.
Quoted: Two Georgia men pleaded guilty to charges of operating a moonshine still in the Chattahoochee National Forest. One of the bootleggers faces up to 35 years in prison for his crimes: making the brew, selling it, and not paying taxes on the proceeds.

Quoted: We generally think of red wines as beverages that exist to warm us up on winter nights, not cool us off on summer days. In fact, though, a chilled red offers all the thirst-quenching qualities of a good rosé and a lot more substance.

These could really come in handy since every single time we fly we're smuggling home wine or liqour. I'm tired of wrapping bottles in clothes, newspaper, bubble wrap--super McGyver style--to get it home. Hooray for entrepreneurial winos!
