The end of summer vacation. - Slate Magazine

Sad, but true. I think this is a political issue too!

Quoted: Forget about two-week vacations. Many working people will be lucky to have a day-cation. While cyclical factors like gas prices and the slumping job market have something to do with this, the real culprits are longstanding trends that have altered the structure of our economy. As a result, more Americans view something that used to be an entitlement—paid time off—as an unaffordable or unavailable luxury.

The Anguish of a Part-Timer - New York Times

This article actually counters what the CNN article suggests. In fact, having a part-time job is not the cure-all for working parents.

Quoted: Strangely enough, part-time jobs can be a lot less flexible than full-time jobs.

More working moms dream of going part-time - CNN.com

While I think these mommy-friendly businesses started by women are a really good idea, I'm sick of these articles that tap into maternal guilt regarding working outside the home, rather than looking at society as a whole to find solutions (i.e. better public day care).

Quoted: It seems to happen every few months: a new book or study fuels the "Mommy Wars," the intense debate over whether moms should stay home with the kids or work outside the home. Each time there's spirited talk, angst, and some guilt from mothers who fear they're doing the wrong thing.
