A 10-Armed Goddess Charms a Frenetic Megalopolis - New York Times

    Redot Sudha.
First, Calcutta Durga Pujas are AWESOME!
Second, I disagree with Mr. Mukerjee that it is "excess"...this is the only puja that we celebrate in this way. It is a tradition in Bengali culture...if Rockefeller Center can spend a ton of money on a Christmas tree and Holiday decoration and not be deemed extravagant, how dare he call something this deeply rooted in our spirit and culture, an "excess". he's just being a stick-in-the-mud cause he wasn't invited.

Quoted: Half Mardi Gras, half Christmas, Durga Pujo, a five-day festival dedicated to the Hindu goddess Durga, is the most important religious event for Hindus in Calcutta

    Calcuttaweb.Com - Durga Puja Pandals

Quoted: Picture of Kolkata(Calcutta)-Durga Puja Pandal

Durga Puja, a celebration of the Hindu Goddess Durga, in the city of Calcutta, is also a celebration of the arts. Nowhere else in the world does one find such inspiration and creativity in the fine arts and architecture than here in Calcutta--browse through the pictures of Pandals--temporary decorations housing the various idols of Goddess Durga. In the recent years, artists have started using unique building materials to design these pandals, including this one made of fiber glass!
