This particular topic is prevalent even in the US-- Girls not being able to wear certain types of clothing in primary and secondary schools, in fear of drawing negative male attention.

Kevin Connolly was born w/o his lower extremities-- his parents decided to not get him prosthetics or keep him in the hospital. He's grown up as such, and in my opinion is practically superman. He won the silver medal in skiing in the X-Games, and loves to travel the world. During his travels, he was inspired by curiosity of everyday people, about him, about why they stared at him, and decided to snap pictures of these complete strangers...this is his website of his phenomenal photos. Who inspires you?

i appreciate the attempt to socially dissolve this system, but is literally throwing money at the problem ethical or effective? how is this different from getting a dowry from the girl's parents? now you're getting it from the gov't (man or woman).
Quoted: BAIRAGHAR, India- Plenty of women may feel they deserve an award for marrying their husbands, but Madhavi Arwar is actually getting one -- from the Indian government, no less.

First, Calcutta Durga Pujas are AWESOME!
Second, I disagree with Mr. Mukerjee that it is "excess"...this is the only puja that we celebrate in this way. It is a tradition in Bengali culture...if Rockefeller Center can spend a ton of money on a Christmas tree and Holiday decoration and not be deemed extravagant, how dare he call something this deeply rooted in our spirit and culture, an "excess". he's just being a stick-in-the-mud cause he wasn't invited.Quoted: Half Mardi Gras, half Christmas, Durga Pujo, a five-day festival dedicated to the Hindu goddess Durga, is the most important religious event for Hindus in Calcutta
