At Grace Hopper a couple of years ago, I attended a panel of women CEOs who talked about the difficulties of being a woman and running a company (the difficulties ranged from not being seen as authoritative in the workplace to figuring out how to be a good parent when the company was on fire; the solutions ranged from "here's what you do" to "I have no idea how to solve this one").
That panel was interesting and useful.
I would like to think that this event is similarly interesting and useful. However, the agenda is pink and the keynote is "the girls' guide to building a million dollar business". Which makes me worry that the advice will be along the lines of "if you aren't seen as authoritative, wear high heels so you appear taller."

2 FaversViewed: 14 TimesQuoted: I have a picture in my head of what the average entrepreneur is like. I’d guess pretty young (think Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc.) living the red beans and rice lifestyle and working 80+ hours a week and sleeping under their desk. On some parts, I’m probably right — but on many, I’m flat-out wrong.

1 FaverViewed: 4 TimesQuoted: There are two forms of exotic beta. 1) Apply "normal" strategies to "exotic" assets like investing in Namibian and Mongolian equities, timber, shipping freight, wine, uranium, art, movies, violins or footballers. Or 2) apply "exotic" strategies to "normal" securities with new trading styles and finding arbitrages in traditional markets. Personally I prefer alternative strategies for any security ("normal" or "exotic") but then as a risk averse, conservative investor I am not prepared to speculate on traditional OR exotic beta. They are too hazardous for my risk tolerance. Alpha is safer.
