Quoted: 當紅的社群網站Friendster 2005年由於傳出將出售而由紅翻黑，給了競爭者快速崛起之機。以集結眾多青少年用戶與未成名樂團的MySpaces一躍成為此類網站翹楚，後為News Corp.收購。

而起源於哈佛畢業生Mark Zuckerberg學期報告目錄的Facebook則因為開始接受公司及大學電子郵件帳號登入而使會員快速擴展。同時又出現其他國家的競爭者，像是南韓的Cyworld來勢洶洶前往搶食美國年輕網友市場。

不久後，社群網站快速成長的驚人氣勢也引來美國政府的注意—自然不是沒來由的。五月間，美國國會開始考慮要求圖書館及學校限制少數民族？存取社群網站服務，像是MySpace與Facebook。幾周後，美眾議院提議立法要求社群網站紀錄使用者活動以便協助犯罪案件偵查。

而同時間，社群網站間的對話也使得此類服務的未來發展引發關注。在一場名為「全球網際網路高峰會」(Global Internet Summit)的大會上，Piper Jaffray分析師指稱社群網站為網路新秩序的首要形塑力量，不過也有年輕網路使用者表示他們已「超越MySpace階段」，認為它已經過氣。而社群網站要如何獲利也還沒有清楚商業模式出來。

MySpace與FaceBook自己也有重重挑戰。七月間MySpace超越Yahoo Mail成為全球最多人造訪的網站，卻碰上一場加州熱浪造成該公司伺服器當機，服務停機長達12小時，使大批使用者氣得跳腳。九月開學期間，FaceBook為迎接大批興沖沖前往登錄的大學新鮮人而推出的「News Feed」遭會員抨擊監視網友行動。為平息眾怒，FaceBook公開道歉，改推新的隱私方案，讓使用者可以控制自己的會員資料的使用。

一年進入尾聲，社群網站面臨紛至杳來的新問題。包括影片的版權問題。環球音樂集團即炮轟MySpace對盜版內容置若罔聞。
