Is there an add on or function for pdf organization? (please say yes, please say yes.)

did you ever try itunes for pdfs? did it work?

songbird still has nothin on this front.

not an add on for pdf organization yet, but there is one for faves.com, coincedentally enough. I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to make a plugin for adobe acrobat if songbird is based on firefox. You CAN add pdfs to you songbird library, After all, there's support for Greasemonkey!

I did try out iTunes for pdfs. Conclusion: you can edit the tags, making browsing your pdfs way easier. Since the tag field options are designed for mp3s and the like, there are a bunch of extras you won't use (like composer). You can just enter in a bunch of proper names, topics, and concepts into a single field so that when you do a search in the itunes search field (which functions as a live search, btw), all the files you tagged will come up. I have only put in a few pdfs thus far. I have gotten way behind on my organization, so i may switch over to itunes.

However, there is an added bonus if you enable the function to let itunes organize your files within your filesystem for you. some people don't like this, since itunes isn't very good with organizing files across multiple hard drives. but if yr dealing with only one filesystem/hard drive, then it's great. But even if you just dump all of your pdfs in a single folder and tag them in itunes, i think the whole organization issue would be irrelevant.

I was kind of hoping that you would be able to read the pdfs in itunes with some spiffy functions to make reading easier since apple sells ebooks at their itunes store. but you can't. if you double click the file as it appears in itunes, it opens the file up in yr default pdf viewer. so itunes is purely organizational.

so you haven't tried letting itunes organize? i am mostly interested in auto-renaming and directory hierarchy generation based on metadata entries (artist/date/album/track). only thing is i don't think you can customize the *way* that itunes organizes. this is what stopped me from trying it out way back when we were talking about this. maybe songbird will allow for this since it is something of an itunes clone plus foobar-like customizability. holy crap it is 88 degrees and rising outside! gotta get out...

yeah, i've let it organize. it does just what you described. when you rename in itunes (which can be done in batches), it renames the files themselves. you can also append "track numbers" to pdfs and have them listed in a certain order (helpful with books that are divied up into sections and you don't want to combine them into a single pdf). and you CAN customize the way itunes organizes (sort of). just right click the name of a column (e.g., "artist") and a bunch of options pop up. so instead of "album" you can have "grouping" (german idealism, etc.), release date, and there a bunch of other categories that you could use for your own purposes ("description", "genre", "comment", etc.).

i'm assuming that you do not use itunes for music, cuz if you do, you need to set up a second library (T-ROCK, SPM, YOU LISTENING?? YOU CAN CREATE MULTIPLE LIBRARIES FOR ITUNES AND SWITCH BETWEEN THEM!).

to create and switch between multiple libraries:

1: with itunes closed, hold down the option key while opening itunes (shift key for PCs).

2: It will ask you if you want to quit, create, or choose a library. Create a new one and save it where you want.

3: To switch between libraries, just select to choose a different library (the sucky thing is that you can't shift between libraries whil itunes is open).

hmm might try it when i actually have a chance to blow a few hours tagging.

word. I was like an inch away from organizing pdf through itunes. I started to do a little (just my deleuze stuff) but here is the last thing. Its really a small deal and maybe you all have ideas on how to fix it. (by the way I agree with all Neal said about the draw backs and benefits of itunes organization). Here is the deal. You can switch back and forth between itunes libraries and save them etc. I have several saved. I started keeping several libraries and the first problem I had was wanting to listen to music and search my e-text library at the same time. (quite arguably my most common activity). I read a post board somewhere where someone said itunes was coming out with a section for pdfs (just like there is one for movies). That is the ideal. until then you can open a separate library, or you can just make pdfs one of your playlists. Drawback: as a pdf play list it makes your library look really messy, filled with pdfs and mp3s all over the place. If there is a way to listen to music while still sifting through my e-texts I am down right away. If not, I still think actually itunes is the best, but still havent gotten around to converting. In either case I think it is inevitable that itunes will come out with a new version that gives pdfs their own category in the library
