Paris' highly successful Véllib program is almost definitely coming to Chicago. Apparently the city gov't is working out offers from JCDecaux and Clearchannel. While I would rarely, if ever have to use it, the benefits to cycling in Chicago would be enormous if the program were successful (more bike lanes, more drivers accustomed to and aware of cyclists, less traffic and pollution, and so on).
Quoted: Launched in July, Paris' "Velib" bikes were part of the mayor's idea of making the city more ecologically friendly and reducing traffic. Just two months on, the bikes seem to be changing the way people get around the city.

If yr ever in Paris and need a bike shop, this is just about all you need. However, some shops specialize in vélos de ville or vélos électronique--in which case you might be SOL if you need a tube in a pinch. But still...fucking awesome...
zerohour | Shared With: Everyone - Apr 24 2008 | paris, bikesHoly Shit. Not only is this the most helpful list of shit concerning bikes in paris ever, but this just might be the best tour-guide blog ever. Wanna know about the 5 best brews of coffee in paris period? The best couscous? The best crèpes? The Best dive bars? Well, they claim to know. I think i've got some--ahem--research to do...

click to playA twelve part feature on the history of the Tour de France. I saw a repeat of this on late night british television last week. It was done in 2003 for the 100 year 'anniversary' of the Tour. It's pretty sweet and it's filled with fun facts. Like, did you know that the first winner of the Tour won by car sharking his way to the finish?

Lauren and two friends had their bikes stolen fucking crazy-style. The story actually made it into the campus newspaper...\
also, k recommended that people add comments to the article in support of the university compensating in some way for the fals sense of security. as noted by one of el-train's friends, Kerrigan totally deferred responsibility when he stated that no one who currently works i the building was responsible. the question is, then, if the person who did install them did work for the u of o, but no longer, then it was as an agent of the u of o that they were responsible for the shitty ass installation. and since the u of o is responsible for its own grounds maintenance, then they should also own up to the fact that they've been fucking up by not maintaining their bike racks and securing them...

1 FaverViewed: 2 TimesQuoted: In the Single Speed World Championship bicycle race, riders are encouraged to wear costumes and not take the race too seriously. Some racers wore Boy Scout uniforms. Others wore pajamas, a full-body neon skinsuit, bunny ears or fishnet tights. Men willing to do the entire race in briefs received special prizes. Hecklers along the course route threw beer cans and shouted insults.
